Transportation in Korea
Getting around in Korea is safe, easy, and affordable. Most people use three forms of transportation; the trains, city buses, and taxis. There are separate subway systems in every large city in Korea. The stations will get you within walking distance to anywhere you could possibly need to go, and there are always cabs and buses available at the train station if you're in a hurry. Maps are multi-lingual and very easy to navigate, and the terminals are well marked. Subway fare is generally 900 won (less than 1 US dollar). Express trains are used when traveling relatively long distances within the country. From the northernmost city to the southern coast, it takes about 4 hours and costs roughly 30,000 won (less than 30 US dollars). Ticket purchasing is, again, multilingual and easy to navigate.
Information desks in the train stations are usually very helpful for lost travelers or even just to advise you of the fastest route to take. City buses are not as foreigner friendly, it's very hard to know which bus to take without a degree of hand holding from your Korean co-teachers or an experienced friend. However, they are very cheap, stop almost anywhere you can imagine, and run almost 24hours. Taxis will take you anywhere you want to go, and you can almost always flag one down. Although the rates are usually cheaper than those in your home country, they are much more expensive than public transport and often not as efficient, as road traffic in Korea is often very congested.
Very few foreigners choose to own a personal vehicle in Korea. However, it is possible and a relatively simple process. The easiest way to go about this is to obtain an International driver's license, which is good for one year. You can do this by providing your home driver's license (translated and notarized), passport and photos, and proof of insurance to one of the 24 license exam locations (click here to find one close to you). You will need to take a physical exam and pay a small fee. If you plan to stay longer than one year, you will need to obtain a Korean driver's license. This can be done at the same exam center, but requires further testing and roughly 20,000 won in fees. Your best bet for purchasing a vehicle, is coordinating with another foreigner who is leaving Korea and selling their vehicle. If you are unable to find a match for your needs, there are used car dealerships with cars available for as little as 500,000 won. You will have the most luck with English speaking sales people in areas where there are US Military bases.
